c1905 mfr. WINCHESTER Model 1892 RIFLE in .25-20 WCF C&R
TURN OF THE CENTURY LEVER ACTION
Here we present a C&R Winchester Model 1892 Lever Action Rifle chambered in .25-20 WCF, made in 1905 in New Haven, Connecticut. Another fantastic design from the mind of John Moses Browning, the 1892 was made to replace the venerable and iconic 1873 and featured its pistol caliber chamberings. The result was a trim and light rifle that was an immediate hit and stayed in production from1892 through 1938 and produced upwards to 1,000,000 rifles. Carbines such as this one continued production through 1941. The Model 1892 was first chambered in .44-40 cartridges, and in 1895 the 25 WCF emerged. The .25 WCF was, and still is, a fairly short-range, medium range game cartridge.
This Model 1892 rifle features a 19-3/4-inch shortened round barrel chambered in scarce .25 Winchester Center Fire. The .25 WCF was valued for its speed, trajectory, and lower recoil. It was a popular round in the Winchester Model 1885 High Wall single-shot rifle.
The overall condition is good. Patina throughout. The barrel and magazine tube were long ago shortened, likely to make for a handier rifle for carrying or even packing on a horse or in one’s Model T. The action is strong. The bore shows worn rifling that is still serviceable. The stock shows much use and remains solid. A small brass escutcheon was installed on the underside of the butt stock for purposes yet unknown to us.
