c1904 COLT Small Frame LIGHTING .22 Caliber Rimfire SLIDE ACTION Rifle C&R
Pump Action Rifle Made in 1904
Here we present a C&R Colt Lightning Small Frame Slide Action Rifle, made in 1904, in Hartford, Connecticut. This was Colt’s entry into the pistol caliber rifle and carbine market, which was absolutely dominated by Winchester at this time. Pistol caliber rifles were instrumental in the hands of those settling the West, as they were able to carry one type of ammunition to feed both their long gun and their sidearm.
It also enabled a rifle to be stoked with the maximum number of cartridges, sacrificing power for capacity, useful when outnumbered at close range. The Colt Lightning was fairly successful, but never approached the numbers that Winchester’s lever actions were able to achieve. This example is chambered in .22 rimfire, a very light and handy cartridge for hunting small game or just going out to do some plinking.
The overall condition is very good. Original finish/patina. The action is excellent. The bore is clean with good rifling. The stock and butt plate show modest signs of honest use and remain solid. This one has the added benefit of a tang-mounted rear peep sight. The barrel-mounted rear sight is a replacement.
