c1897 mfr. Antique NEW YORK POLICE Marked .32 COLT NEW POLICE REVOLVER NYPD
Authorized by NYC Police Commissioner TEDDY ROOSEVELT
Here we present an antique New York Police Issued Colt New Police Revolver, made in 1897 by the Colt Manufacturing Company with a production run from 1896 through 1907 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Colt New Police is a double-action, six-shot revolver that can be fired in single or double action. The gun was chambered in the .32 New Police, which is dimensionally identical to a flat-nose version of the .32 S&W Long, except for the nose shape. In addition to the .32 New Police cartridge, the revolver was available in 32 Colt. The diameters of the two cartridges are not the same, with the 32 Colt being approximately 0.020 inches smaller in diameter than the New Police. The later .32 New Police chambering was more popular than the 32 Colt chambering.
Colt made 49,000 of these New Police models. The New Police was famous as the first standardized double action revolver the New York City police bought, by order of then Police Commissioner Teddy Roosevelt. The New Police Revolver was replaced in the Colt catalog in 1907 by the improved Colt Police Positive.
The overall condition is rough, but functional. Who knows where this thing has been! It has been shortened and had a new front sight installed. Hammer spur bobbed. The action is strong. The bore is bright with thin rifling and a frosted appearance. The right grip is chipped. Numbers match.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 3 inches.
