c1889 mfr COLT Antique FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER Model 1873 .44-40 WCF Revolver
Black Powder Frame SAA .44-40 WCF 6-Shooter
Here we present an antique Colt Frontier Six-Shooter Model 1873 Single Action Army Revolver in .44-40 WCF, manufactured in 1889 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Colt Frontier, or Frontier Six-Shooter was Colt’s 1873 “Model P” type revolver manufactured in .44-40 Winchester caliber instead of .45 so that it was compatible with Winchester’s Model 1873 ammunition. “Colt Frontier Six-Shooter” was the actual name of the Colt pistol model, and this was acid-etched on the left side of the barrel. After 1889, the legend was roll-stamped until 1919, when the caliber designation “.44-40” was added. These revolvers made excellent companions to rifles at the time as they were chambered for the same ammunition, meaning that the user only had to keep one type to feed both guns. Due to wear, this panel has been obliterated, giving the impression that this barrel is unmarked. The front of the trigger guard is stamped “44 CAL”
Colt began offering .44-40 as a single-action chambering in either late 1877 or 1878, as sources vary. Between serial numbers 41,000 and 45,000 the factory began acid etching the term “Colt Frontier Six Shooter” on barrels. This continued to approximately 1889 at the 130,000 serial number range which is when “Colt Frontier Six Shooter” became a roll stamp. It was standard until production ceased for the first time in 1941. By then 71,391 standard fixed-sight single-actions, single-action targets, Bisley’s and target sight Bisley’s had been made as .44-40s.
Though Colt enjoyed the largest contracts of any handgun maker during the American Civil War, it had to rely on its array of percussion fired revolvers, namely the 1860 Army until the Smith & Wesson owned Rollin White Patent expired in 1869. This enabled them to begin making revolvers with completely bored through cylinder chambers in order to utilize modern metallic cartridge ammunition in the most effective manner. In 1869, Colt began development of a suitable cartridge revolver in earnest, first coming out with a number of conversions for their percussion lines, until 1872 when they debuted what was to become the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army in the 1872 U.S. Trials. Needless to say, it won, and became the Army’s revolver of choice. It also became the sidearm of choice for many others like cowboys, guards, lawmen, crooks, shopkeepers and all manner of civilians.
The overall condition is good. Patina throughout. The action has all four clicks and holds all three positions with good cylinder lockup. The bore is patinated with good rifling. The grips show use and remain solid. Numbers match.
