Product Description

c1876 BRIDGEPORT SHARPS “OLD MODEL” .50-70 CARBINE

Scarce Example of the Powerful & Reliable Sharps!

Here we present a scarce antique Sharps “Old Model” Carbine in .50-70, made in Bridgeport, Connecticut circa 1876. This carbine was made from the ground up especially for dealers on the Western Frontier in direct response to renewed demand from folks in the Wyoming & Montana Territories after Custer’s defeat at Little Bighorn (Greasy Grass) in the same year, according to Marcot, Paxton, Bailey & Labowskie. This carbine may at first appear to be a cartridge conversion, but this was in fact made at the factory in Bridgeport as the Sharps Company used up all the new old stock from percussion fired Civil War carbines. Sharps modified some of these parts by grinding off unnecessary parts and fitting new hammers. These guns are sleek, no frills, and handy, and did they pack a wallop!

This one features the bandless forearm secured by two screws beneath to secure. The barrel is a light, tapered one, 25 inches in length and in .50 caliber. The top of the barrel is marked “SHARPS RIFLE CO. BRIDGEPORT CONN.” The front sight is the military block style and the rear is the Lawrence marked carbine style. The sling ring mount on the left side of the receiver has been filled and ground where the old gal would have accepted the sling ring bar. Military style stock with buttplate and patchbox. The serial number range for these was quite narrow, with examples being found in the 157000 to 158000 range, making this a rare find.

The overall condition is fine. Lots of blue finish. Fine, bright, sharp bore. The action is excellent. This is such a neat piece of history that represents what was happening at the time in the Western US between ambitious settlers, the US military, and the increasingly fed up Native Americans.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 25 inches.

Caliber: 50-70-457 (Made for 1-3/4 inch case)

Overall condition as seen in photos.
