c1850 ENGLISH Antique FENTON 11 GAUGE Side x Side PERCUSSION Shotgun Twist

Solid Birmingham Made Fowling Shotgun!

Here we present an antique Fenton English Double Barrel Side x Side Percussion Shotgun in 11 Gauge, manufactured circa the 1850s in Birmingham, England. Birmingham was the epicenter for English gunmaking all the way through the turn of the century. This is an English fowling piece that is elegant in its simplicity and practicality. This double barrel hammer gun would have been used primarily for putting game on the table or defending one’s homestead.

This quality of this double is apparent in the hand even if the décor is rather Spartan. It features Fine Twist barrels with a center rib also marked “LONDON”. Each lock is plain except for the name “FENTON”. This is a medium to heavy gun that probably would have excelled at waterfowling in the marshes. It remains in fantastic shape with smooth and reflective bores and attractive Damascus twist pattern on the barrels. The underside of the barrels bears the “11” gauge designation, along with the initials “G.G.”, Birmingham proofs, and a castle or rook depiction, which may be a maker’s mark. There was a notable gunmaker in London by the name of Richard Fenton but this double gun was made after his known active years.

The overall condition is near fine. The actions are strong and tight. The bores are reflective and smooth with no dings. The stock is solid with a nice finish. “FENTON” is engraved on both locks. The checking on the wrist remains sharp. Here is a great English shotgun that would still be a credit to the maker as well as the user in the field or marsh!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
