Product Description
c1753 Antique JOHANN Andreas KUCHENREUTER Pistol
ENGRAVED & CARVED .50 Caliber Pistol, Gold, Silver
Here we present a German Johann Andreas Kuchenreuter Pistol made circa 1753 in Regensberg, Germany. The Kuchenreuters were a multi-generational family of gunmakers who has been described as a gun-making dynasty. Johann Andreas and his father were the most notable, counting amongst their clientele both local and international royalty the likes of the King of Bohemia, princes of Thurn and Tayis, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Russian tsars.
This beautiful pistol would have started out life as a flintlock and converted sometime after the percussion firing system came out, probably the 1830s or 40s. This pistol is the product of the senior Johann Andreas Kuchenreuter and dates to around 1753. The full-length walnut stock terminates in a horn forend tip and has all brass furniture. The barrel is round and has an octagonal breech section and a flat sighting plane that runs nearly the full length of the barrel. The rear sight has a stationary notch but also a flip up leaf for longer range, complimented by a blade front sight. The sighting plane and muzzle have inlaid tarnished silver arabesque and the maker’s name “JOH. AND. KUCHENREUTER” also in silver. The very top of the breech has an inlaid gold maker’s mark of a horse and rider.
The overall condition is very good. There was some loss of wood under the stock long ago and it has darkened with time and use. The bore is smooth and in very good condition. The action remains excellent. Here is a great old pistol with almost 260 years of experience!
