Product Description

BRITISH Royal Mail Steam Packet Co. WEBLEY Metropolitan Police Revolver 450

Property Marked Webley Sidearm! Antique

Here we present an antique Webley Metropolitan Police Revolver in .450, property marked by the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company, made in England circa the late 1870s to early 1880s. Webley produced their first pistol is 1853 and introduced their first double action in 1867. The success of the world famous Webley Firearms Company was in no small part due to the existence of the RIC. In 1867, Philip Webley launched a new compact revolver design, which was to achieve recognition throughout the world and remain in production for more than 60 years. Webley secured a contract to supply his weapon to the RIC in January 1868, a stroke of good fortune which ensured the financial success of the company and established it as the foremost supplier of personal firearms to the Government and Colonial Forces for years to come.

This example is Metropolitan Police stamped and is marked R.M.S.P. Co. for the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company. The Royal Mail Steam Packet Company was a British company founded in London in 1839. The services offered were similar to the Pony Express, except it was all by sea, covering the British Empire! Tours and mail were delivered to various destinations for not only consumers but boasted Government mail contracts as well. The line had the motto of “Per Mare Ubique” (everywhere by sea). Of course, like most businesses, the RMSPC had its share of ups and downs, but eventually it became the largest shipping group in the world.

“R.M.S.P. Co.” is engraved on the top of the frame. This set comes with a RSMP “S.S. Orca” ashtray. The S.S. Orca eventually was renamed the “Calgaric” and sold, making the ashtray a rare piece of history. A RMSP Co. list of passengers from the 1912 “Avon” is also included. The list shows names passengers and includes schedules and operating hours for meals and touring arrangements. The Avon was requisitioned as a troop ship for WWI in 1914, survived and was returned to the RMSP in 1919.

The overall condition is fine. The action is strong. The bore is shiny bright! The grips are in great shape. This is a fantastic piece of history that is display ready!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 2-1/2 inches.

Caliber is .450

Overall condition as seen in photos.
