BRITISH Antique Brass Barrel FLINTLOCK .80 Caliber Pistol with SNAP BAYONET
WESTON Maker with FLARED BARREL to .80 at MUZZLE
Here we present an antique British Brass Barrel Flintlock Pistol with a snap bayonet by Weston, made circa the early-1800s in Birmingham, England. In this era, Birmingham and London were the epicenters for English gunmaking all the way through the turn of the century.
It was of course, made primarily for self-defense, and very well would tell stories if it could. Much happened in Britain, in its colonies and abroad during this period. Its bore would have been very intimidating if by chance you were on the receiving end. And, after you had expended your one shot, you now had a snap bayonet blade to defend yourself with. This self-defense pistol would have been most at home in the pocket of anyone in the busy cities of London, Paris and Liege during the very early 1800s.
The overall condition is good. Nice patina on the brass. The action is excellent and strong. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock has repaired cracks at the fore end from the ramrod tube on back on each side as well as the split at the rear lock screw on the left side (this one is typical of sidelocks). None of these move and the stock shows wear and is solid otherwise. The bayonet does still function and lock up though the spring that used to throw the bayonet into place is anemic with age and use—can still be put into place manually. A neat piece!
