BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS AMERICAN ARMS WHEELER SWIVEL BREECH Deringer Antique
1 of only 400 Manufactured in .41 Rimfire Between 1866-78
Here we present an antique American Arms “Wheeler Patent” Swivel Barrel .41 Caliber Deringer made circa the early 1870s in Boston, Massachusetts. Production began shortly after the close of the American Civil War and lasted through the late 1870s, seeing only about 400 produced in .41 caliber during that time. Deringers of all sorts had by then become a common mode of pocket-sized firepower, though small revolvers were quickly eclipsing the single shot design. H.F. Wheeler was the man responsible for this design, which featured superposed double barrels that swiveled to access the next shot. To load the barrels slide out on the arbor pin.
The “top” barrel flat reads “AMERICAN ARMS CO. BOSTON. MASS.”, and the “bottom” side reads “PAT. OCT 31. 1865 – JUNE 19. 1866”. Each barrel has its own front sight.
The overall condition is very good. Nice blue finish and patina. The action is strong. The bore is in good shape for age with good rifling. The rosewood grips are solid.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrels are 2-5/8 inches.
