BIG BORED BELGIAN BRASS BARRELED BLUNDERBUSS Coach Gun 19th Century Antique
With MM Company Inscription on the Barrel!
Here we present an antique Belgian Brass Barreled Blunderbuss, made circa the mid-1800s in Liege, Belgium. The blunderbuss is a firearm with a short, large caliber barrel. They are flared at the muzzle, frequently throughout the entire bore, and used with shot and other projectiles. The blunderbuss is commonly considered to be an early predecessor of the modern day shotgun, with similar military and defensive use. It was effective only at short range, lacking accuracy at long range. These were the coach and riots guns of the day, the weapon of choice for someone “riding shotgun” for an express company or postal service or those on a ship to repel uninvited boarders and pirates.
This one has an engraved inscription on the top of the barrel that reads “GH of MM Co”. While we have yet to identify this company, it would seem that it was used to protect precious cargo on land or sea. Brass was a good material for either, but especially the sea as it is less prone to be damaged by salt spray and seawater.
The overall condition is good. Nice patina. The action is strong. The bore is smooth with an untouched patina. The stock shows some hard use and fitting repair; the stock remains solid. Belgian proofs. A great piece for display!
