BELGIAN Antique DOUBLE BARREL SxS Percussion .58 Caliber CONVERSION Pistol
Intimidating Self Defense Pistol Made Circa 1830 in Liege
Here we present an antique Belgian Double Barrel Percussion Conversion Pistol, made circa 1830 in Liege. This pistol would have started out life as a flintlock and converted sometime circa the 1840s when the percussion firing system came into being. Today we know that Liege is a city in Belgium, perhaps most famous for its centuries of arms manufacture. But at this time, Belgium was not yet independent, and was a parcel of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands until recognized in 1839. Revolution and the push for independence began in earnest in 1830.
This pistol is fairly small in stature, having the barrels measure only 4-5/8 inches. It would be easy to conceal in a coat pocket of a distinguished gentleman or in the muff or purse of a lady. With two barrels at .65 caliber, this pistol would have been quite the deterrent against ne’er do wells and ruffians roaming the city streets in a tumultuous Europe in the early to mid 1800s.
The overall condition is fair to good. The action functions on both sides, with the right being slightly weaker. Both bores are in good shape despite darkening from age. Both the left muzzle and stock are chipped. The stock is stable despite a couple of small period repaired cracks. Lightly carved stock and cast brass fixtures. Engravings on the right lock are not legible and the left appears to read “A. LIEGE”. Repairs to the trigger guard are stable. A neat old pistol that would do well on display!
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
