BAVARIAN Antique RIEGER of MUNICH Double Barrel 16 Gauge PERCUSSION Shotgun
CARVED STOCK, SCROLL ENGRAVED LOCKS
Here we present an antique Johann Rieger Double Barrel Percussion Shotgun, made circa 1850 in Munich, Germany. Rieger was an active gunmaker in Munich between the years of 1843 to 1855. For centuries, the country of Germany has been known for gunmaking. They are known for their quality of workmanship and accuracy. This double barrel hammer gun would have been used for putting game on the table and protecting the homestead. This is a very Germanic fowling piece that is elegant with its intricate engravings in its simplicity and practicality.
This shotgun showcases Germanic aesthetics throughout and features a solid rib over the barrels, locks neatly engraved with Germanic scrolls, a trigger guard that is of carved wood, and a butt stock that has a generous cheekpiece with a large carved scroll behind it with a stippled background. The breech of the barrel as well as the barrel rib are subtly inlaid with silver that has tarnished: the rib spells out the maker and origin as “RIEGER in MUNCHEN”. Also equipped with sling swivels.
The overall condition is very good. Original finish/patina. The actions are excellent. The bores are smooth and in nice condition. The nipples are also in good condition. The stock is smooth and solid. This is a very nicely balanced and relatively lightweight double that mounts to the shoulder and face beautifully, and exudes Old World craftsmanship.
