BANK OF ENGLAND Antique BROWN BESS Flint MUSKET
Napoleonic Wars Musket by LACY & Co of London
Here we present an antique Brown Bess Flintlock Musket by Lacy & Company, made in England circa 1795 to 1815, Marked as property of the Bank of England. Brown Bess muskets were the primary military long arm for British infantry from 1722 through to about 1838, encompassing over a century of global history to include the Seven Years War, French & Indian Wars, American Revolution, the colonization of East Asia, the War of 1812, and, of course, the Napoleonic Wars.
Though typically a musket used by soldiers, this musket would have been used to guard the Bank of England. The Bank of England was the prototypical central bank, founded in 1694 to lend the government funds. The bank was then privately owned and is the 8th oldest bank in the world still in operation. It is sometimes referred to as the Old Lady of Threadneedle, having been located on Threadneedle Street in London since 1734. Keeping bullion and large sums of currency on hand would have required armed guards, and the Bank of England proved no exception. Other such pieces are known to have existed, one in particular, another Brown Bess belonging to the Bank of Ireland during this same period, which was said to have been used by the bank’s men to guard the bank itself as well as to repossess property as necessary. This is an extraordinary piece of history in this musket.
The lock is marked “LACY & Co”. The barrel is marked “BANK OF ENGLAND” in large letters on the top. Birmingham proofs are found on the left side of the barrel’s breech end.
Overall condition is very good plus. The iron parts are semi-bright with clear markings. The stock is smooth and solid. There is a split at the rear of the stock that seems to be a natural result of the wood grain and poses no risk to the integrity of the thing. The bore is in good condition, dim with a bit of dust. The action remains very strong. The cock is canted forward a bit more than typically seen but does not effect functionality at large. This is an excellent piece of history and it is unlikely that we will see another one!
