Product Description

AUSTRIAN Antique “DASCH IN GRATZ” DOUBLE Rifle .65 Caliber PERCUSSION SxS

EUROPEAN Hunting Rifle Made Circa the Mid-1800s

Here we present an antique Austrian Percussion Double Rifle, made circa the 1830s in Graz, Austria. Cajetan Dasch was a maker of firearms from approximately 1800 until his death in 1840. His wife is said to have carried on the business another 8 or so years. While alive, he was known for his work and made rifles to order for clients as far as Paris, London, Rome, and Naples.

This rifle features side by side barrels with a shared front and rear sight. The rear sight is set further forward and makes for quick sight acquisition. The barrels are Damascus twist and there is a Liege proof mark on the underside. Interestingly, the left barrel has twisted rifling while the right barrel has virtually straight rifling. Each bore has its own lock and trigger. The double triggers seem to be set up for a left-handed individual as they are in opposite order to most other guns. The left (front) trigger has a single set feature for a more precision shot, which makes sense as that barrel has twist. The other bore with the straight rifling is probably like that for faster loading (ie. it is easier not to fight against twisted rifling), straight rifling is by some accounts more accurate than a smooth bore, and it could be loaded with shot and perhaps have less effect on patterning versus a twisted rifling. This rifle also showcases Germanic styling to include the blockish, fluted butt stock with the sliding wooden patchbox, the carved wooden trigger guard, sling attachments, and engraved touches on the trigger guard, barrel tang, butt plate tang, etc. The maker’s mark “DASCH IN GRATZ” is marked in silver on the top of the barrel rib.

The overall condition is good+. The actions are strong. The bores are in good shape for age with deep, sharp rifling. The stock is solid. An attractive Austro-German double rifle!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrels are 27-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .65
