ARAB STYLE Antique Percussion MUSKET with BRITISH Pattern 1853 Style Lock
Composite Musket with CIVIL WAR ERA Pattern LOCK
Here we present an antique Arab Style Percussion Rifle-Musket with a British Pattern 1853 Lock, made circa the mid-1800s possibly in the Barbary Coast region of North Africa. The Barbary Coast was home to much upheaval, as many of the various kingdoms that made it up were member states of the Ottoman Turkish Empire. Pirates found their safe havens on the coast and raided the Mediterranean Sea and taking slaves. The slave trade was another unsavory reality of the northern coast of North Africa. In fact, piracy and the taking of European and American slaves came to be so great a problem at various points over the centuries that nations like Spain and even the U.S. took military action—Spain in the 1730s and America in 1805.
The Enfield 1853 rifle-musket was used by both the North and the South in the American Civil War and was the second most widely used infantry weapon in the war, surpassed only by the Springfield Model 1861 Rifled Musket. The Confederates imported more Enfields during the course of the war than any other small arm, buying from private contractors and gun runners. It has been estimated that over 900,000 P53 Enfields were imported into America and saw service in every major engagement of the war.
