Antique “WIND GUN” 19th Century Side Lever 7mm SHOOTING GALLERY Air Gun
Primarily Used for INDOOR TARGET SHOOTING/HUNTING
Here we present an antique Side Lever Air Gun, made circa the 19th Century. Air guns represent the oldest pneumatic technology. The oldest existing mechanical air gun dates back to about 1580 and is in the Livrustkammaren Museum in Stockholm. This is approximately what most historians recognize as the beginning of the modern air gun. Throughout 17th to 19th century, air guns in .30 to .51 calibers were used to hunt big game, deer, and wild boar. These air rifles were charged using a pump to fill an air reservoir and gave velocities from 650 to 1,000 ft/s. They were also used in warfare, the most recognized example being the Girandoni air rifle.
Air guns of this style were used primarily for indoor target shooting. “Wind guns” had several advantages over conventional firearms including that they were quieter, smokeless, quicker to reload, and they also required less cleaning since they did not require corrosive black powder. This gallery air gun is chambered in approximately .28 caliber/7 mm with a smooth bore, dovetail mounted blade and notch sights and is mounted with a walnut forend and buttstock. It functions through the use of a right side mounted lever that is pulled back for cocking in order to fill the cylinder reservoir, and upon pulling the trigger the spring loaded piston releases.
The overall condition is fine. Refinished. The action is excellent. The bore is shiny bright and smooth. The fore stock has a stable split at the front on both sides. The wood has been modestly refinished.
