Antique WHITNEY Contract M1822 FLINTLOCK Musket
Dated 1827 & Marked by Philos & Eli Whitney Blake
Here we present an antique Whitney Model 1822 Flintlock Musket, made in 1827 in New Haven, Connecticut. This musket was manufactured by Philos and Eli Whitney Blake at the Whitney Armory after Eli Whitney Sr.’s death and before their cousin Eli Whitney Jr. was old enough to take over the company. This is an example of a late flintlock musket that was really an improvement on the Model 1816. The percussion firing system was just around the bend. This musket would have had the Mexican-American War ahead of it, as well as the various Indian Wars preceding the American Civil War.
This musket was from the First Contract (1826-1830), of which there were 15,000 produced. The lock is marked “U.S./P.&E.W. BLAKE” The rear of the lock is marked “NEW HAVEN/1827”. The tang is marked “1827” along with the number “S 536”. There is a “Circle P” proof mark on the left side of the barrel. There are faint inspector cartouches on the left side of the stock including a “V” and two very light initials.
The overall condition is very good. The metal surfaces are smooth and dark with age with much of the original brown finish remaining on the barrel. The markings are clear and legible. The stock is in good shape. The bore is dark and smooth. The action on this musket is strong. Own an original U.S. flintlock musket by Eli Whitney’s company!
