Product Description

Antique U.S. SPRINGFIELD Model 1896 KRAG-JORGENSEN .30-40 KRAG ARMY Rifle

SPANISH-AMERICAN WAR INFANTRY RIFLE

Here we present an antique Springfield U.S. Model 1896 Krag-Jorgensen Rifle, made circa 1897 at the U.S. Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Model 1896 was the second Krag rifle produced for the United States. The design was developed by Norwegian designers Ole Herman Johannes Krag and Erik Jorgensen. It was then adopted by Norway, Denmark and the United States, becoming the first general issue smokeless, small caliber (compared to the 45-70 GOVT), and repeating rifle in U.S. military history.

Several features made this firearm desirable over others of the time. One of these was the integral magazine which could be loaded by simply dumping 5 cartridges into the hinged and spring-loaded box on the right side of the rifle. This made the rifle easy and quick to reload. The second feature was the magazine cutoff, catering to the prevailing philosophy of the day, which was to have riflemen fire and load single shots until the order was given to open up the magazine for rapid fire. This strategy would hold its ground up through the Great War. The most notable conflicts that the U.S. Krag would see were the Spanish-American War in Cuba and the Philippine-American War.

The Spanish-American War was fought between April 21, 1898, and August 13, 1898, and began in the aftermath of the internal explosion of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor in Cuba. The most famous of all the units fighting in Cuba were the “Rough Riders”, the name given to the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry under the leadership of Theodore Roosevelt. They became famous for their role in the Battle of San Juan Hill, which became the stuff that legends are made of. So, who knows? Maybe this rifle was in the hands of one of the “Rough Riders” in their charge up San Juan Hill.

Overall condition is very good. Original blue finish. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The stock is in good condition, showing use, and has a faint but visible cartouche on the left stock flat. A very nice piece of American history!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 30 inches.

Caliber: .30-40 Krag (.30 ARMY)

Overall condition as seen in photos.
