Antique U.S. SHARPS New Model 1865 PERCUSSION Rifle Full-Length CIVIL WAR
With Saber Bayonet Lug
Here we present an antique U.S. Sharps New Model 1863 Rifle, made circa 1863 and still in its original percussion format. Over 100,000 Sharps rifles and carbines were purchased and used by the federal government during the American Civil War. Those few full-length rifles purchased by the Navy had saber bayonet lugs (like this one), while the Army contract version had socket bayonet lugs. Post-war, some of these were converted to .52 Sharps Rimfire circa 1867 for use in the West by the federal government.
This is one of the iconic rifles of Civil War and Western lore, as they were handy, accurate, powerful and reliable guns, and many went to the Western Frontier as trappers, explorers and settlers moved that way. They experienced some of the most exciting times in American history during the Indian Wars, the settling of the West, and the connecting of the coasts with the Transcontinental Railroad.
This one features the a patchbox in the stock as well as the saber bayonet lug with the short guide, which was to allow use of either saber bayonet or the socket bayonet.
The overall condition is very good. Original patina. The action is excellent. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The rear sight yoke remains but the rest of the assembly is absent. The walnut stock shows honest period wear and use. The leather sling is showing its age yet remains intact.
