Product Description

Antique TRYON 1841 MISSISSIPPI Rifle Leman Alteration Bayonet CIVIL WAR .58

State of Pennsylvania LEMAN ALTERATION w/BAYONET & TOOL

Here we present an antique Tryon Contract U.S. Model 1841 Mississippi Rifle, manufactured circa 1847 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as part of a 5,000 rifle contract with the Ordnance Department. This rifle was produced by the Tryon Manufacturing Company and was the smallest and least often encountered contractor to produce this rifle. The firm of George W. Tryon of Philadelphia produced and delivered only 5,000 arms between 1846 and 1848, which was only about 5% of the total production of the Model 1841 “Mississippi Rifle”. Tryon appears to have received his contract due to a request from the state of Pennsylvania that noted they preferred to receive arms produced by Tryon in their allotment of rifles due yearly under the Militia Act of 1808. Due to the state interceding on his behalf, Tryon received the very first of the U.S. Model 1841 Rifle contracts.

This example is one of a reported 2,352 Model 1841 rifles period altered by Henry E. Leman to accept the .58 Caliber “Minie” and to accept a Model 1840 angular socket bayonet by turning down a section of the muzzle end of the barrel, on contract with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

The overall condition is very good. Original patina. Excellent action. The bore is in very good shape for its age and maintains some reflectivity within. Solid stock with two visible Ordnance cartouches on the left stock flat. The initials “WH” have been scratched over the one at the rear. “1847” dated lock. “US” marked bayonet. The interior of the brass patchbox includes a spare nipple and a combination nipple wrench and screwdriver tool. A very neat and rare alteration of the handsome Model 1841!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 33 inches.

Caliber: .58 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
