Antique REMINGTON-ELLIOT .22 Short RING Trigger PEPPERBOX Deringer PISTOL
5-Shot Ring Trigger Deringer Style Pistol
Here we present an antique Remington-Elliot .22 Caliber Pepperbox Pistol, made circa the 1860s in Ilion, New York. Manufactured from 1863 to 1888, this is a five shot, .22 caliber pistol using a cluster of stationary barrels and a revolving firing pin, similar in concept to the Sharps Pepperboxes. German silver blade front and frame notched rear sights. This pepperbox is functionally double action only, with the concealed hammer operated entirely by the motion of the ring trigger. The grip section is contoured so the butt rests on the ring finger. This repeating design was able to utilize the new rimfire ammunition like Smith & Wesson, without infringing on Smith & Wesson’s Rollin White Patent for bored through chambers on a revolver’s cylinder. They made very nice, easy to use and compact firearms for 19th century conceal and carry.
In Flayderman’s 8th Edition, he tells us that total production numbers are estimated to be around 17,500. These don’t seem to come up for sale very often, indicating not a lot of these survived over the years, especially in the condition of this example.
The overall condition is very good. Original blue finish and gray patina. The action is excellent. The bores are in good condition, sharply rifled with some mild spotting. The numbers match. The rosewood grips are in good condition.
