Here we present an antique Palmetto Armory Model 1841 Percussion “Mississippi” Rifle, made in Columbia, South Carolina circa 1852. Approximately 1,000 Palmetto Armory Model 1841 “Mississippi” rifles were made for the South Carolina militia, and many saw hard use during the American Civil War. In 1865, General Sherman’s forces destroyed 500 of these found at the Citadel, which was then the South Carolina Military Academy. Palmetto Armory made Model 1841 rifles are described in depth on pages 123-127 of George D. Moller’s book American Military Shoulder Arms Volume III.

The lock is marked “COLUMBIA/S.C. 18__” vertically at the tail of the stock (with the last two numbers too obfuscated to make out but should be “52”) and “PALMETTO ARMORY/SC” in a circle around the palm tree marked at the center of the lock. These markings have been retraced to make them clearer. The barrel has been bored out smooth to .62 caliber and has a faint “W. Glaze & Co.” marking on the left flat of the barrel near the breech.

These rifles saw service for the south when war erupted in 1861. The Mississippi Rifle is so called because its service life included the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), during which Jefferson Davis (future president of the Confederacy) led his Mississippi troops, who carried and favored the rifle. It was a rugged and reliable weapon. There was a Palmetto Regiment of Volunteers that fought hard in this conflict and it was the first to raise its regimental flag over Mexico City. They suffered a high casualty rate in the process.

The overall condition is good. Patinated throughout with some heavy pitting around the breech and percussion nipple. Rear sight is absent. The action is strong. The bore is smooth and dim as it was bored out to .62 caliber. The stock shows heavy use and weathering with stable splits along the grain throughout. A rare Southern musket by Palmetto!
