Product Description

Antique PAIR of ENGRAVED Belgian .48 Cal. Percussion TARGET/DUELING Pistols

Liege Proofed Pistols with RELIEF CARVED STOCKS

Here we present two antique Belgian Percussion Dueling Pistols, made circa 1850 in Belgium, likely in Liege. Belgium has, for centuries now, been a major weapons making center for world. Purpose-built dueling pistols have various improvements to make them more reliable and accurate, such as longer and heavier barrels, spurs on the trigger guards, saw handles, platinum-lined touch-holes and hair triggers. All component parts were manufactured, hand-finished and then adjusted with great care and precision, which made dueling pistols much more costly than standard firearms of the period.

Special care was taken when molding the lead bullets to ensure that there were no voids which would affect accuracy. Pistols were carefully and identically loaded, and each duelist was offered his choice of the indistinguishable loaded pistols. As duels were generally fought at short distances which were paced out, typically 35 to 45 feet between stationary opponents, extreme accuracy was not required. Here are two fine examples of Belgian craftsmanship. Both of these pistols are matching, feature beautiful engravings, carved stocks, and Damascus barrels.

Both pistols are nearing fine. Deep floral engravings on the locks and barrels. Beautiful carved stock. Strong action. The bores are good. The second pistol is missing the front sight post, though the base remains. Here is a truly wonderful set of percussion dueling pistols!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrels are 9-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .48 Percussion
