Antique NATHANIEL STARR US 1818 Contract CAVALRY MILITIAMAN’S Battle Saber
Inspected by Luther Sage with SCABBARD
Here we present an Antique U.S. N. Starr 1818 Contract Cavalry Saber, made in Middletown, Connecticut made and delivered circa 1820-22. Some of the 10,600 sabers were contracted to Nathan Starr by the United States Ordnance Department in December of 1818 for use by the militia cavalry in several states.
This cavalry saber is very similar to the 1812 Contract version, which was based on the British Pattern 1796 Dragoon Saber. This saber features a wide, curved blade and a simple stirrup style guard.
The ricasso is marked “US/P/LS/STARR”. The inspector’s initials are for Luther Sage.
The overall condition is good. Oxidized blade, light surface pitting, with original patina/finish. Solid, firm hilt all around (Missing twisted wire, light leather chipping on grip).
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Overall condition as seen in photos.
