Product Description

Antique Large Frame COLT M1878 FRONTIER .44-40 DOUBLE ACTION ARMY Revolver

Robust and Reliable 1884 “FRONTIER SIX-SHOOTER”

Here we present an antique Colt Model 1878 Double Action Revolver, made in 1884 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Colt Model 1878 is often called the “Frontier” or the “Double Action Army” revolver. It was designed by William Mason, who was Colt’s factory manager, along with Charles Brinckerhoff Richards, the Superintendent of Engineering. The 1878 shares similarities in design with the Colt Model 1877, but it features a larger frame—earning it the nickname “large frame” double-action revolver—while the Model 1877 is known as the “small frame” version.

The 1878 Double Action Frontier was essentially a sturdier, more reliable upgrade of Colt’s earlier double-action revolvers, the Lightning and Thunderer. It was built to be larger and more robust, making it a trusted sidearm for those who needed dependability. Additionally, the Model 1878 was offered in a wider variety of calibers compared to the Model 1877, which only came in three options.

The overall condition is good. Exhibiting faint remnants of the original finish. The action is strong, although the cylinder has some wiggle when locked up. The bore is in good shape with serviceable rifling. Both grips average handling wear and remain good overall. Markings have worn. This would have been a great gun to carry in the Wild West to go along with your Winchester chambered in the same caliber!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 4-3/4 inches.

Caliber: .44-40 Winchester Center Fire

Overall condition as seen in photos.
