Antique L.L. HEPBURN New York Percussion .40 Caliber TARGET Rifle ENGRAVED
Fine, Rare, Desirable American Gunsmith and Marksman
Here we present an antique Lewis L. Hepburn Half Stock Percussion Target Rifle, manufactured circa the 1860s in Colton, New York. Lewis Lobdell Hepburn was born in Colton, New York in 1832. His first job was as an apprentice blacksmith somewhere around 1850 and in circa 1855 he began working as a gunsmith out of his home in upstate New York.
Lewis Hepburn had at least three careers after he finished his apprenticeship. One as a country gunmaker of muzzle-loading rifles (this is one such rifle), another as a senior employee of E. Remington & Sons, for whom he designed the breechloading, single-shot action No. 3 Hepburn rifle that bears his name and third, a career as the principal designer for the Marlin Firearms Company. He is credited for the design of the Model 1888 Marlin. He made custom muzzle loading sporting rifles on his own from 1858 through 1878 prior to going to work for Remington. While Superintendent of Remington’s Mechanical Department, Hepburn became a top-notch marksman and a member of the American Creedmoor International Shooting Team and competed in the historic first Creedmoor matches.
This one is a beauty! The overall condition is fine. Original finish. The action is excellent. It has a unique style of single set trigger with a flatter profile trigger. The set function of the trigger may need some adjustment, but the regular trigger pull works great. The bore is in very nice shape, clean with sharp rifling. The stock is solid and has its original finish. Lots of German silver hardware to include the trigger guard, butt plate, patch box, etc. The sights offer some great options for adjustment and sight picture. The front sight is windage adjustable. The barrel-mounted rear sight has a fold-down semi-buckhorn and there is a tang-mounted foldable peep sight. This would have made a great target piece but one can well-imagine taking this rifle afield as well!
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 27-1/2 inches.
Caliber: .40 Percussion—The barrel is marked “.420” which is the widest measurement from land to land. Groove to groove measurement is .404”.
Overall condition as seen in photos.
