Antique ITHACA 10g “NEW ITHICA GUN” Double Barrel Side/Side HAMMER Shotgun
Manufactured in Ithaca, New York circa 1890
Here we present an antique Ithaca Gun Company Double Barrel Side by Side Hammer Shotgun, made circa 1890 in Ithaca, New York. The Ithaca Gun Company was originally established in Ithaca in 1880 and is still a manufacturer of shotguns and rifles. Over the years, Ithaca made numerous firearms, most notably this Ithaca Flues double barrel shotgun. The “New Ithica Gun” was introduced in 1887, replacing the original Baker Model hammer gun. The Crass Model, Ithaca Gun Co.’s first hammerless model was introduced the next year. The NIG continued to be built and serial numbered right along with the various hammerless models, Crass, Lewis, Minier and eventually Flues until about 1914 when it was replaced by the “Two-Bolt” Model which was essentially a hammer version of the Flues.
Ithaca became famous for building firearms based on expired patents owned by Remington Arms. They also purchased patents from other firearm designers. In 1895 Emil Flues was granted Patent # 546,516, for a double barrel shotgun with only three moving parts per barrel. Ithaca bought the patent in 1907 and upgraded the design to allow for mass production. With the Flues designed Ithaca double, which became the best-selling American double of all time with more than 223,000 produced between 1908 and 1926, Ithaca effectively drove Remington out of the double gun market.
