Antique GERMAN Double Rifle by PAAL of BIBERACH, BADEN-WURTTEMBERG .38/.52
Carved Stock, Engraved Lock, Set Trigger
Here we present an antique German Double Rifle, made circa the mid-19th century in Germany by I.G. Paal of Biberach, Baden-Wurttemerg.
This is a scarce example of a German double rifle from this period. This side-by-side features the right barrel in .38 caliber (rifled) and the left in .52 caliber (smooth). The barrels are 29-1/4 inches in length and octagonal. This gun also features double triggers, with the smaller, right bore having a single set trigger feature for precision shooting. This would have been useful for going afield prepared for multiple types of game, and this German tradition would culminate in the type of weapon called a “Drilling”.
The stock is carved and has a generous cheek rest. The locks and hammers and other small parts are engraved. The top of the barrels is marked with the maker’s name and location in silver (making it difficult to photograph; it is very clear and looks better in person).
The overall condition is very good. Robust actions and the single set trigger is functional and crisp. Very nice bores. The stock is solid and shows use. The locks, hammers, and trigger guard have been engraved. A beautiful piece of German craftsmanship from the southern part of the country!
