Antique GEORGE O. LEONARD Half-Stock .478 Caliber Percussion LONG RIFLE
Antique NEW HAMPSHIRE Made Long Rifle!
Here we present an antique George O. Leonard Half Stock Percussion Long Rifle, made circa 1864 in Keene, New Hampshire. A. Leonard was an active gunmaker in Keene between about 1859 through 1869.
This rifle features an octagonal barrel in .478 caliber, large enough to take medium to large sized game or to defend the homestead. Double set triggers. There is an eagle patchbox set into the right side of the stock. There are other German silver adornments as well.
Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques.
This is a very refined and “traditional” rifle for its day. It is an excellent specimen that shows clean lines, good balance, fine wood selection, and overall craftsmanship. The front sight is a very fine hooded front post that has windage adjustability with markings on the barrel in front of the dovetail for precise repeatability. The rear sight is an elevation adjustable peep that is tang-mounted.
The overall condition is fine. Original finish. The action is excellent. The double set trigger is crisp. The bore is shiny bright with sharp rifling. The stock is in great shape with a glossy finish and handsome grain structure.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
