Antique FRENCH Military CHATELLERAULT Arsenal Model 1822 Line CAVALRY Saber
With BRASS HILT, LEATHER GRIP and IRON SCABBARD
Here we present an antique French Chatellerault Model 1822 Line Cavalry Saber manufactured circa the mid to late 1800s (date marked very faint). Production of this sword began in July of 1823 with little variation over the years, with slight modifications occurring in 1851, and again in 1922 with this example being made by Manufacture Nationale d’armes de Chatellerault.
On January 18, 1822, the Committee of cavalry decide unanimously in favor of a curved sword for the entire cavalry. The French light cavalry consisted of about 21,000 troops in 1845, 30,000 in 1856, 18,000 in 1870 and 28,000 in 1914. The model 1822 light cavalry was used by all these horsemen in European conflicts and overseas, including Crimea, Mexico, and North Africa. From the jungles of Indochina to the burning sands of the Sahara, and to the bloody trenches of the First World War, this sword served France and her empire for almost 150 years.
The overall length of this sword is 42 inches and the blade measures 36 inches with manufacturer markings on the spine. It sports a brass hilt, a wire wrapped leather grip, and an iron scabbard.
The overall condition is very good. The blade is bright and in fine shape, running straight and true. Solid hilt and tight twisted brass wire. Manufacturer marks are marked on the spine. Good scabbard overall. Numbers match on the scabbard and hand guard – “1468”.
