Antique FRENCH CHATELLERAULT Cavalry M1833 .69 Percussion OFFICER’S Pistol
French Proofed MILITARY Pistol
Here we present an antique French Cavalry Model 1833 Percussion Officer’s Pistol, made circa the 1840s at the armory at Chatellerault. This high grade pistol was the first European .69 caliber military pistol designed on the outset using the percussion firing system and is among the last single shot percussion pistols utilized by the French military, or any country’s military for that matter.
The arsenal produced arms such as swords from medieval times to 1816, when it became a primary French firearms production facility. It produced arms all the way through the World Wars and finally closed in 1968.This pistol was built new in the percussion format, while many of its predecessors had been built as flintlocks before being converted to percussion. It was used primarily by the French cavalry. This pistol is very likely to have seen action in any of France’s many colonies during this period. Other significant conflicts include the Second French Intervention in Mexico as well as the Franco-Prussian War. They were replaced by the Chamelot-Delvigne Model 1873 revolver.
The pistol is of robust construction. As mentioned above, the bore is a substantial .69 caliber. The pommel cap is equipped with a lanyard ring. The markings on this pistol are plentiful. Multiple other proof and acceptance marks can be found throughout.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is in very good shape for its age. Legible markings. Checkered grip. Solid stock/grip. “MN” marked on th right barrel flat.
