Antique FIELD & CO. 13 Gauge Double Barrel Percussion Shotgun SIDE BY SIDE
BRITISH Shotgun Likely Imported to the United States
Here we present an antique British Field & Co. Double Barrel Side by Side Percussion Shotgun, manufactured circa the late 1870s to early 1880s in Birmingham, England. Albert Field & Co. were Birmingham gunmakers working during the last quarter of the 19th century. They produced percussion shotguns, as well as breech loading cartridge shotguns.
This shotgun would have been imported to the U.S. just prior to the American Civil War. During this era, there were many English and Belgian gunmakers who were capitalizing on the eager markets in the United States. Its short-length 17-3/8 inch barrel made for easy hunting in the dense woods. This would have been a staple of most homesteads hanging over the mantle to protect the family from ne’er to wells during the tumultuous times of the mid to late-1800s.
The overall condition is good. Robust action. The bore is in good shape for its age. This example has maintained a solid stock with sharp checkering. Legible markings. Nicely engraved. Smooth gray patina.
