Here we present a very scarce antique Confederate Civil War “Dog River” Pattern Heavy Cavalry Saber. Sometime in the 1950s authors like William Albaugh III were trying to figure out and make sense of Confederate sword manufacturing. During that time, a document dated from the Dog River Foundry was discovered, but no one then studying knew either where that was located or what they made. Because of this uncertainty, the name “Dog River” was given to any unknown and unmarked Confederate blade. Later, in the 1970s, someone noticed the existence of a Dog River that fed into Mobile Bay in Alabama, so now a likely location had been established, though no one knew the exact location or what type, or types of blades were produced there.

This saber generally follows the U.S. Model 1840 configuration with the brass pommel and a two branch guard including the knucklebow and two side branches. It has a wooden grip with the wrap missing with a single wire strand. The blade is typically Confederate, following standard lines with a gentle curve, single edge, and unstopped fuller. The blade has no markings, which is consistent with this type of Confederate blade.

The overall condition is good. The blade has a settled dark patina. Solid hilt. The hand guard has a slight wiggle. A crack is present in the wood grip. The brass wire is tight. Here is a great opportunity to own a true Confederate Civil War saber, all original that is recognizably southern from a long distance away. It would make a great addition to any Civil War cavalry collection, and especially if you lean towards the southern side.
