Antique CIVIL WAR Springfield U.S. “ARTILLERY MODEL” 1863 Rifle-Musket .58
Whitney Arms EAGLE Marked Stock w Cartouches
Here we present an antique Springfield U.S. Model 1863 Rifle-Musket, manufactured circa 1863. The right of the buttstock is marked with a large eagle and shield over “WHITNEY ARMS Co.”. Eli Whitney Jr. reorganized his family’s business in 1863 as the Whitney Arms Co. and is known to have purchased condemned and leftover parts from the U.S. armories as well as other outside contractors primarily to sell to states and militia units, with some sources stating these Model 1863 rifle-muskets with the Whitney stamp were possibly assembled post-Civil War.
This example has a “1863” dated lockplate and barrel and faint but visible cartouches on the left flat. The barrel and stock have likely been shortened from its original configuration. The American Eagle and “WHITNEY ARMS Co” is stamped on the right side of the stock.
The overall condition is very good. Patina throughout. The action is excellent. The bore is untouched with a thick layer of fine dust with strong rifling showing through. The stock is solid with good cartouches on the left flat.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
