Antique CIVIL WAR 3rd Model COLT DRAGOON .44 Perc. Revolver SHOULDER STOCK
One of 1,200-1,500 Designed for a SHOULDER STOCK
Here we present a rare antique Colt 3rd Model Dragoon Revolver, manufactured in 1859 in Hartford, Connecticut. Only 10,500 of this model was produced with only 1,200 to 1,500 designed for mounting a shoulder stock. The Third Model was first offered in 1851 and continued production through 1861, for a total of 10,500. The revolver is in .44 caliber, weighed 4 pounds and 2 ounces and has a part round and part octagonal barrel. The main difference between a Second and Third Model Dragoon is the change from a square-back trigger-guard to a rounded version. The barrel and cylinder were blued with casehardened frame, hammer and loading lever. The revolver was furnished with one-piece walnut grips which were varnished for the commercial market and oil-stained for the military contracts.
Colt’s Dragoons experienced some of the harshest conditions the mid-19th century had to offer, and it is amazing that any survived, in any condition. This pistol was designed for use by horse-mounted rifleman, and it is so much pistol that you will want a horse to carry it for you because of its significant weight. This one would have seen use during the American Civil War. This is a great opportunity to add one of Samuel Colt’s most recognized inventions to your collection, a Civil War era Colt Dragoon!
The overall condition is good. Gray patina throughout. The back strap has some silver finish, protected by the detachable stock. Some of the original cylinder scene remains visible. With the stock attached: the action will hold half cock but not full cock. This is due to the middle of the attaching iron having been split and then repaired at some point (this could be solved with a bit of file work if one was inclined). With the stock off the revolver: the hammer will hold both positions. The hand spring is weak, but if the muzzle is pointed down when the hammer is cocked the cylinder will index and lock up. The bore is in good condition with strong rifling. The grip shows use and remains solid. Numbers match throughout. The wedge screw is a replacement. The wood on the stock shows much use and remains solid. Dark weathered patina on the iron. A very scarce third model Dragoon with a—perhaps even rarer—detachable shoulder stock!
