ENGRAVED, GOLD INLAID, & RELIEF CARVED Double Barrel
Here we present an antique Philipp Poschinger Side by Side Double Barrel Hammer Shotgun, made circa the 1860s in Ferlach, Austria. Poschinger was full swing into gunmaking by 1867 with a shop that included six boring machines, two lathes, two grinders, and 100 craftsmen working for him. Ferlach is in the district of Klagenfurt-Land in Carinthia is the southernmost town in Austria. It is known for its centuries-old gunsmith tradition. They are known for their quality of workmanship and unprecedented accuracy. This double barrel hammer gun would have been used for sport, putting game on the table, or protecting the homestead.
This is a very Austrian fowling piece that is elegant with its intricate engravings, gold inlays, and relief carvings. The choice of wood for the stock shows excellent grain. There is a sculpted horn accent on the back of the trigger guard. Damascus barrels with thin ribs around the circumference. A truly beautiful gun.
The overall condition is fine. Good Damascene pattern on the barrels. Gold accents retained. The actions are excellent and crisp. The bores are clean, reflective and smooth. The stock is solid and in great shape.
