Antique AUGUSTE FRANCOTTE SWISS M1840 CANTONAL ORDNANCE Percussion Pistol
Possible US INSPECTED SWISS Military Pistol
Here we present a nice example of an antique Auguste Francotte Swiss Model 1840 Percussion Military Pistol made circa the early 1840s in Liege, Belgium. There are few examples of this pistol in existence today, and even less in the condition this one is in.
Oberst Folst was the director of the arsenal in Morges, canton Vaud, Switzerland that developed this pistol. Though the reasoning for the development of this pistol is unknown, the contract went to Auguste Francotte in Liege, Belgium to manufacture them for the Swiss military. This model was the result of furthering the development of the 1839 Vaud Cantonal Ordnance Pistol. Auguste Francotte was the primary manufacturer of percussion weapons during the period of time when this pistol was manufactured.
“VAUD 237” is carved into the left side of the stock and stamped atop the barrel. Liege proofs and “AF”, for Auguste Francotte, is stamped in multiple places on this example. Now, here is the interesting part. There are also 2 American cartouches on the left stock flat reading “HBJ” for H.B. Johnson and “OWA” for O.W. Aimsworth. We can find no other examples of an imported pistol being inspected by Aimsworth or Johnson.
The overall condition is very good. The action is strong and tight. The bore is bright and shiny. A very interesting pistol and very clean!
