AFGHAN JEZAIL 1791 Dated “WILSON” Marked EAST INDIA CO. Flintlock Musket

18th Century Musket w/AFGHAN “BRING BACK” Papers

Here we present an antique Afghan Jezail Flintlock Musket, made circa 1791. The original lock is dated 1791. The lock bears the emblem of the Honorable East India Company with a “Heart/EIC”. The jezail is a very uniquely stocked weapon. The curved club stock is speculated as being a way to carry and fire the weapon from the back of a moving horse or camel. This one, and many like this, was made by salvaging a captured British musket’s lock and barrel during the Anglo-Afghan War and placed on a musket of more native design. Some of these are quite beautifully adorned with mother of pearl inlays. To quote the book “Tools of war: History of Weapons in Early Modern Times:

“Afghan snipers were expert marksmen and their juzzails fired roughened bullets, long iron nails or even pebbles over a range of some 250 metres. The Afghans could fling the large rifles across their shoulders as if they were feathers and spring nimbly from rock to rock. The loved to decorate their rifles”.

The extreme length of the barrel made them very accurate at long ranges, such that the Afghan’s sniping from heights and cover was devastating to the British, as they were unable to reach back. Amazingly, some were even used by the Mujahideen in the resistance against the Soviet Union when they invaded Afghanistan. The long 44 inch barrel made loading the weapon from the back of a beast relatively easy as the butt would be set on the ground.

This example includes a leather sling and paperwork from import via the Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan in 2016.

The overall condition is good. Strong. Good bore, does appear to have a blockage/obstruction near the breech end. The stock is solid with an average amount of period wear. “WILSON” is marked on the lock along with a “1791” dating (the letter erroneously dates this item as “1797”). Good leather sling.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 44 inches.

Caliber: .62 Flintlock

Overall condition as seen in photos.
