.45-70 GOVT Antique WINCHESTER-HOTCHKISS Bolt Action Saddle Ring CARBINE
1st Model Bolt Action .45-70 GOVT Carbine Made circa 1882
Here we present an antique Winchester-Hotchkiss Bolt Action Rifle in .45-70 GOVT, manufactured in New Haven, Connecticut. This example is a First Model style Hotchkiss manufactured circa 1882. The Winchester-Hotchkiss rifle was first conceived by Benjamin B. Hotchkiss in 1875 and by 1877 he had four US patents on the design which was sold to the Winchester company in early 1877.
This was Winchester’s first bolt action rifle and their first firearm with a magazine fed from the butt stock. It was also the first repeating centerfire bolt action rifle used by any military. This example is a civilian model given it has no inspection marks or cartouches. It was marketed for military applications as well as a hunting rifle, but it would not see widespread use in the US military. It is equipped with a pinned blade front sight and a folding ladder rear sight graduated to 1,000 yards with a ski jump base. It has a smooth straight grip stock with a single barrel band and a carbine style butt plate.
The overall condition is very good. The action is strong. The bore is semi-bright in good shape. There is a small crack behind the breech that remains stable. All markings are clear and legible. Here is a fantastic piece of history to own and display!
