Product Description

“4-SCREW” Antique Colt 3rd Model DRAGOON Revolver

Colt’s Famous “4 Pounder” Horse Pistol

Here we present an antique Colt 3rd Model Dragoon Revolver cut for a shoulder stock, manufactured in 1859 in Hartford, Connecticut. Only 10,500 of this model were produced, with only an estimated 1,500 of that number made for use with a shoulder stock. The Third Model was first offered in 1851 and continued production through 1861, for a total of 10,500. Colt’s Dragoons experienced some of the harshest conditions the mid-19th century had to offer, and it is amazing that any survived, in any condition. This pistol was designed for use by horse-mounted rifleman, and it is so much pistol that you will want a horse to carry it for you. This pistol weighs in at over 4 pounds. This one would have seen use during the American Civil War and was made just prior.

This 3rd Model features the “3rd Variation” for attaching a shoulder stock, meaning that it has the 4-Screw frame with a notch cut into the bottom of the iron back strap. The top of the barrel is marked “ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY” with the 3-leaf sight bisecting through. “COLTS PATENT” on the left side of the frame.

The overall condition is fair. This revolver obviously saw hard use as many did. The markings on the barrel and frame are clear. The serial numbers match on all parts with visible numbers: grip strap, trigger guard, frame, barrel lug, barrel wedge, and cylinder pin. The cylinder only retains a single visible “4”. The walnut grip has a bit of filler on the right side and is otherwise smooth. The bore is dark with strong rifling on one side and more roughness from about the 1 to 5 o’clock area. The action is functional and strong with a minor timing issue. This is a great opportunity to add one of Samuel Colt’s most recognized inventions to your collection, a Civil War Colt Dragoon!

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 7-1/2 inches.

Caliber: .44 Percussion

Overall condition as seen in photos.
