Product Description
19th CENTURY Antique PERCUSSION 28 Gauge BOXLOCK Hammer Shotgun
Reminiscent of Allen & Thurber’s Single Shot Shotgun
Here we present an antique Boxlock Percussion Shotgun, made sometime in the mid-19th Century, possibly by Allen & Thurber. A boxlock gun has the lock mechanism enclosed inside a kind of box, which actually is the hollow body of the frame, as compared to a sidelock pistol where the mechanism is on the side. Shotguns like this were quintessential pieces for homes in rural areas or on the trail West. This hammer gun would have been used for putting game on the table or for protecting the homestead. Used for sport, provision and protection, shotguns then, like now, have always proven themselves invaluable.
The overall condition is good. Virtually complete blue remains from being refinished. The action is strong and tight. The bore is in good shape. Solid stock with only a thin crack on the right side.
