Product Description

1906 ENGRAVED GOLD Nickel MOTHER-OF-PEARL .38 S&W Safety Hammerless Revolver

With Smith & Wesson Archive Letter!

Here we present a 4th Model Smith & Wesson .38 S&W Safety Hammerless Revolver, shipped to H.H. Valentine 27 March 1906 in its present configuration with the engraving, gold plate, and mother of pearl grips. While the letter does not list an address for the recipient, we believe that it was H.H. Valentine, the manager of Colonie Gun Club in Albany, New York. Publications from the time, such as Forest & Stream (see volume 58 from 1902), show that he hosted trapshooting tournaments, and he is listed as the manager of the club in volume 82 from 1914. Finally, he is listed as having purchased 200 cartridges of .30 Government from Winchester Repeating Arms Company’s New York retail store in a list compiled concerning the “Brownsville Affair” in 1906, which makes for some interesting reading.

These revolvers were made for carry as sidearms. This one holds 5 shots of .38 S&W. Its hammerless design is sleek, and it has a safety bar in the grip strap that is nearly imperceptible and makes the revolver fireable with a normal grip. They were most often produced with a 2-inch, 3-inch, or 3.5-inch barrel. But some 4-1/2”, 5” and 6″ barreled versions are known to exist. This one was made with both a 4-1/2 inch barrel and a 6-inch barrel.

You’ll find the Oscar Young factory floral scroll engravings that adorn the frame and barrel remaining crisp and vibrant. With the gold over nickel finish this and the mother of pearl grips and extra barrel this is one of a kind! The accompanying factory letter states that this revolver was part of a “special order for two units shipped engraved, gold plated finish and pearl grips. The revolver was shipped on March 27, 1906 and delivered to H.H. Valentine (unknown address).”

The overall condition is fine. The action is strong and tight. Grips are in excellent shape. Both bores are in fine condition. This piece will have a prodigious impact on any collection! An absolute gem!

This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic.

Barrel is 4-1/2 and 6 inches.

Caliber: .38 S&W
