1900s HOPKINS & ALLEN Lookalike 45-70 GOVT FALLING BLOCK One Shot Rifle C&R
Single Shot Falling Block with Octagonal Barrel
Here we present a C&R Falling Block Rifle in .45-70 GOVT, made circa the early 1900s. The Hopkins & Allen Manufacturing Company is the likely culprit here. They were located in Norwich, Connecticut, founded in 1866. The name was changed to Hopkins & Allen Arms Company in 1896 and continued until the company was taken over by Marlin-Rockwell Corporation in 1914.
Hopkins & Allen was known mainly for their revolvers, but the firm did start manufacturing single shot rifles like this one in 1888. The company also produced several of both single shot and side-by-side shotguns. Their Falling Block were chambered in a variety of calibers. Its single shot action would have been great to teach a young lad the importance of making every shot count! This one features an octagonal barrel.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore is bright and rifled. A thin split is present on the pistol grip and remains stable with light pressure. Solid buttstock. The frame has smooth brown patina, and the barrel finish has been scoured.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrel is 30-1/4 inches.
