1900 mfr. COLT Small Frame LIGHTING .22 S, L Rimfire SLIDE ACTION Rifle C&R
Pump Action Rifle Made in 1900
Here we present a C&R Colt Lightning Small Frame Slide Action Rifle, made in 1900, in Hartford, Connecticut. This was Colt’s entry into the pistol caliber rifle and carbine market, which was absolutely dominated by Winchester at this time. Pistol caliber rifles were instrumental in the hands of those settling the West, as they were able to carry one type of ammunition to feed both their long gun and their sidearm. It also enabled a rifle to be stoked with the maximum number of cartridges, sacrificing power for capacity, useful when outnumbered at close range. The Colt Lightning was fairly successful, but never approached the numbers that Winchester’s lever actions were able to achieve. This example is chambered in .22 rimfire, a very light and handy cartridge for hunting small game or just going out to do some plinking.
The overall condition is fine. Original blue has been preserved. Strong, smooth slide action. The bore is in very good shape with nice rifling. The walnut stock is solid with honest wear. An engraved rampant colt is on the left side of the receiver. A very nicely preserved Colt rifle!
