18th Century GOLD DAMASCENE FLINTLOCK SHOTGUN by BATISSE of NIMES, FRANCE
Side by Side ~17 Gauge Leather Cheek Pad
Here we present an antique French Flintlock Side by Side Fowler by Batisse of Nimes, France, made circa the mid-18th Century. This double barrel shotgun was made for bird hunting. It has unusually long barrels, even for this period at 41 ¼”. The comb of the stock has a fiber (perhaps horsehair) stuffed leather pad for the cheek seen at times in French guns of this vintage. The barrels are marked in gold Damascene with the maker’s name “Batisse” and his location “a Nimes” surrounded by vining designs. The same is marked on the bottom of each lock. Each lock has a sort of skeletonized flash pan which gives them the appearance of floating. Each of the muzzles has a reinforced bevel.
The overall condition is good. Original patina with gold. The actions are excellent. The bores are smooth and patinated. The stock shows use and has some minor splits around the edges but overall is solid. This would be a fantastic and stately piece for the display cabinet.
Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
Barrels are 41-1/4 inches.
Gauge: ~17 (.65 caliber at the muzzle)
Overall condition as seen in photos.
