18th Century GERMANIC FLINTLOCK Belt Pistol 65 Caliber Antique Carved Stock
GROTESQUE MASK POMMEL, BRASS HARDWARE
Here we present an antique Germanic Flintlock Belt Pistol, made circa the 1700s. This pistol is full-sized, made for wearing on a belt or carrying on the pommel holster of a horse. It could certainly be considered a martial pistol.
Then, as now, single shot rifles and muskets were the primary arm of the day, useful for everything from hunting to combat. Pistols were certainly not as numerous but still very useful for combat since most firearms at this time were limited to a single shot. A man expecting trouble might carry as many pistols on his person as he could.
This one features a grotesque mask engraved brass pommel and pierced brass sideplate. The lock is beveled around the edges and otherwise flat. The stock has a thumb plate at the top of the grip and the stock is carved to accentuate the metallic hardware. 18”+ overall length. It would have been an arm typical in both Western Europe or North America in the second half of the 18th Century.
The overall condition is good. Weathered gray patina throughout. The action is excellent and strong. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock has been repaired around the fore end. The rammer is an old wooden replacement. Overall, a nice example of a flintlock martial pistol from the 18th Century.
