Officer’s Pistol with Ornate Casting & Gold
Here we present an antique French Officer’s Flintlock Belt Pistol by Merieux, made circa the late-18th Century in St. Etienne, France. This is a full-sized fighting pistol with a 8 ½” barrel in a gaping .69 caliber. The pommel, side plate, and trigger guard are cast and engraved to depict panoplies of arms and armor as well as floral scroll and roses. The top of the barrel likewise depicts a panoply and is finished in gold. The lock is marked “Merieux”, the maker, who was out of St. Etienne. The stock is carved to accentuate the lock and there is a rose carved into the top of the stock behind the barrel tang.
The overall condition is near fine. Original gold finish. The action is excellent and crisp. The bore is smooth and patinated. The stock is solid. The tip of the ramrod was broken long ago.
