Product Description

1893 mfg. Antique J.M. MARLIN M1889 Lever Action .38 WCF REPEATING Rifle

CLASSIC Favorite Rifle of ANNIE OAKLEY

Here we present an antique J.M. Marlin Model 1889 Rifle in .38 WCF, made in 1893 in New Haven, Connecticut. Dubbed as the “New Safety Repeating Rifle,” the 1889 Marlin was a mid-sized, redesigned 1888 model. Many key features of these style lever action rifles had already been patented by several people, but John Marlin incorporated all the features into a single functional firearm.

The most noticeable difference is the solid top with its side-ejection system. The new model also utilized a cartridge carrier that raised automatically, closing the end of the magazine after the head of the cartridge had passed into the carrier preventing the next cartridge from entering the carrier and jamming the action. This was an important feature, since the rifle was produced in a variety of calibers ranging from .32-20 to .45-70 GOVT, a feature that would not be duplicated by competing Winchesters for several more years. The similarity between the .38-55 and the .44-40 cartridges sometimes caused confusion for shooters. If a shooter accidentally loaded a .44-40 into a .38-55, the lever would not close properly. With the ’89 Marlin, he simply had to lever downward, as if the .44-40 was an empty shell, and the oversized cartridge would be thrown to the side.

The overall condition is good. Original brown patina. Strong action. The bore is dark with serviceable rifling. Strong rifling. Markings are legible. This example sports a solid stock with an average amount of wear. Some screws heads are stripped.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrel is 19-3/4 inches.

Caliber: .38 Winchester Center Fire

Overall condition as seen in photos.
