1891 mfg. Antique WINCHESTER M1885 LOW WALL .41 CF Single Shot Lever Rifle
Single Shot Pre-TURN OF THE CENTURY Rifle
Here we present an antique Winchester Model 1885 Low Wall Rifle, chambered in .41 Centerfire, made in 1891 in New Haven, Connecticut. The Model 1885 Single Shot rifle was famed gun designer John M. Browning’s first design and patent, and it was the first single shot to be built by Winchester. The patent for the Model 1885 rifle was what brought Browning and the Winchester Repeating Arms Company together for the beginning of their eventual 19-year association. Nearly 140,000 Model 1885s (both Low Walls and High Walls) were manufactured from September 1885 to June of 1920.
There were two basic frame types, referred to as “High Wall” and “Low Wall”, made. The frame types refer to the height of the receiver sides, and its relationship to the breech block. With the High Wall version, built for the more powerful cartridges, just the top of the breech block is visible when viewed from the side. The Low Wall, chambered for all of the various rim fire cartridges, and most of the pistol caliber center fire cartridges, exposes the upper 1/3 of the breech block.
As mentioned above, this example was manufactured in 1891 and subsequently altered to smoothbore which measures at .41 caliber.
The overall condition is good. Gray patina. Strong action. The smoothbore is in good shape. The stock and forend are in good shape. The buttstock wiggles at the frame and has a crack at the right heel. Legible markings.
